Did you know that foliage has a pigment other than green even during the summer? It often has a yellow pigment that is covered up by the green one until fall, when the green starts to fade, that is when the leaves turn colors. Have you ever wondered why they fall off in the autumn?
The reason leaves fall off in the autumn is due to the water they contain. They hold a lot of water in them, when winter comes around, they will freeze. This could harm the internal part of the tree. So, when fall comes each year, the trees develop a type of seal or barrier between the branch of the tree and the stem of the leaf. That way when they fall from the tree, the tree’s branches will be protected from the cold.
There are different chemicals that make them turn different colors. For instance, anthocyanins causes them to turn red and purple. There is also carotenoids, which causes them to turn yellow, orange and brown.
