They are formed in clouds, but the process is slightly more complicated than simply the collection and falling of water. Because of the formation process, they are not one standard size.
When droplets are originally formed, they are too small to be heavy enough to fall. Therefore, numerous raindrops group together to form collections which are about 0.5 mm in diameter or bigger. Once it reaches this approximate size, the droplet is large and heavy enough to fall from the cloud.
Raindrops can range anywhere from 0.5 mm to 4 mm in diameter. If they get any larger, the drops usually separate into two separate drops. Sometimes as drops fall, a gust of wind will carry them back up into the cloud, where they gather more droplets and become larger. Drops can also combine as they are falling. Therefore, this is a wide variation in raindrop sizes, as their sizes depend on how many droplets they interact with as they are created and fall.
They start out as round high in the atmosphere as water collects on dust and smoke particles in clouds. But as they fall, they lose their rounded shape. Flattened on the bottom and with a curved top, raindrops are anything but the classic tear shape. The reason is due to their speed falling through the atmosphere.
